SPECIAL CHRISTMAS PROGRAMMING ON KUWS RADIO

A Holiday Mix of Old and New

KUWS Radio 91.3 FM in Superior & 102.9 FM Ashland, will present a special block of Christmas programs beginning at 5:00 p.m. on December 23rd. The lineup will include everything from radio drama to a performance of The Messiah.

The regularly scheduled Monday night programs including Mind Matters, On Point, Computer Doc, and 91 Jazz Street will be pre-empted by this special holiday programming.

At 5:00 pm, a ghost of Christmas past will start the evening, as Orson Wells and the Campbell's Soup Playhouse present Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol. This 1944 recording features Lionel Barrymore as "Scrooge," and is a true classic of the season.

At 6:00 pm, Jack and Lew and the whole Radio Superior gang will be on hand for a repeat broadcast of Radio Superior 1938. The program features actual news reports from December 24th 1938 along with appearances by some of the most memorable Radio Superior characters like "Uncle Bob." School children from the Superior Schools helped make the program and will have both speaking and singing parts.

At 7:00 pm, Musicians from UW-Superior take center stage with a recording of a recent holiday concert at UWS. The broadcast features the UWS Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Matthew Faerber

Then at 8:00 pm, topping off the evening, KUWS will broadcast the December 8, 2002 performance of Handel's Messiah as performed by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Markand Thakar, and featuring soloists Patrice Michaels (soprano), Tracy Watson (mezzo soprano), local favorite William Bastian (tenor), and Leon Williams (baritone).

We are very pleased that we were able to work out an arrangement with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra to present this concert to our audience," said KUWS Station Manager John Munson. "The Messiah is one of the best known and most powerful choral and orchestral works ever produced."

KUWS Radio is a co-curricular activity of the Communicating Arts Department at the University of Wisconsin - Superior and an affiliate of the Wisconsin Public Radio Ideas Network.
